Well Ellis, this is a nice old vintage machine, back when the Toro name actually meant something. No luxuries or safeties of any kind with this baby, just pure muscle contained within an tank of a body. And while you technically got her to start and run, I did find it odd that you never did a compression check on it, which can tell you a lot about the life of an engine. Secondly, I'd be checking that timing key, cause it could also be running out of time. The backfire's were kind of an arrow pointing that direction for me. Keep at it Ellis, I wanna see this tractor running like a song.

With all due respect, you do not create a lot of confidence in your knowledge or ability with this video. This is the second video covering belt replacement on this model mower where the mechanic is fumbling through a trial and error, guess work process to effect repair. It might have been better to have performed this task from start to finish at least once before making a video. Thanks for the effort though.

I am dealing with what I believe is the same thing with my John Deere s240. Can't you access this t- pulley by either the black carriage or by removing one back tire? TY

Yes i remember doing that awhile back on a Husqvarna mower awd had to replace the belt , cant remember the pulley i think it was still good at that time just the belt for it , those awd are good mowers

I wasn't aware the compresson releases were ever used on flat-head engiines. The compression ratio on those is normally lower than the newer OHVs.

Fix stuff and keep it out of the landfill! And you get a few bucks besides!

It is fun making changes to a mower I have a Yard-Machines riding mower that is now a Yard-Man I re did everything in it even a whole different hood is on it and it looks amazing

Briggs and Stratton have gone downhill very quickly which is unfortunate my only Brigg flathead is still going strong with a little bit of work and servicing every now and then. But any company who makes any motor but doesn't want you to change the oil needs serious avoidance.

Bought a Yard Machines 3 1/2 HP from Lowes in the late nineties. I replaced it with a Toro Recycler 22 in. self propelled which I still use. The YM sat unused about a year and then I cleaned the carb and replaced the air filter,primer bulb,spark plug,muffler and changed the oil. It ran like new and I gave it to a lady that needed a mower but could not afford to buy one. Those old flathead Briggs engines would last with regular maintenance.

Carb kit by volume is 1.85

It's sad to see so many broken mowers, here in Sweden mowers are Expensive as hell! Anyway you do a great work there keep it up!

I have the same briggs and stratton motor but it's the 5.5hp version, I got it at a garage sale. The owner was asking $20 for it, but then he said I could have it for free. It had the same problems yours had, bad gas, and a bad carb. I replaced the carb, spark plug, air filter, fuel lines, and I flushed the tank, and now runs great! I bought a pump off amazon that outputs 2800psi so i can build my own pressure washer, just waiting for a frame and wheels currently, then i'm all set. There also was a Kärcher pressure washer at the garage sale for free with the same motor, but I did not have space in the car to take it unfortunately.

I'm always amazed at how filthy people let their mower get, spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on a machine and don't do any maintenance, not even wash it once a year 🙄

I recommend using the non ethanol pump gas from SUNOCO.

Hey bro one technician to another never tell your customers to remove the spark arrestor and leave it out because if something ever catches fire you can also be held liable and not only that over here in Texas that's a $25,000 fine so if I were you I would clean out the spark arrestor and reinstall it remember bro not all of us have 25 Grand just sitting around doing nothing

Hello, I'm Joshua and I was going to ask you if you can spread the word about what I do, I make videos of cutting yards and I post them and ask for donations, of course if they can. The reason I ask for donations is to help my dad because he can't work because of his foot. I have a newer model of this lawn mower, you basically have to take the front wheels off now to get the top plastic cover off so you can get to the front axle pulley. There are also more metal tabs that guide the belt, so it looks like it is wrong (my belt was broken so I didn't have a reference) because it is rubbing the metal, that is fine, once tensioned it has like a hairs width of room. You should put the belt on the back pulley first, that is the hardest one unless you want to take that wheel axle off too, then around the front one and put the axle and plastic cover back on, hope you don't lose any screws in there, then put two of the 3 pulleys on as done in the same configuration of this video, then around the blade one, then the final pulley (the one with the screw) will relatively easily go on. Make sure not to put that pulley bolt in at an angle, then re-attach the blade as that is holding the motor pulley before re-attaching the cable and spring on the rear. Worst thing is with this model, while you are working, oil/fuel has been leaking into either the exhaust or the carburetor, depending on which way you tipped it, in my case, the auto-choke spring also jumped off so take the top cover off, take and clean those things out (just a rag and some carb cleaner will do, it will smoke for a few minutes after you start) make sure there are no dangling springs around your carburetor, reattach those, put the covers back and start the engine. If you don't put the cover back on, you'll hear a loud rattling, it's just the pull chain (took me about 30m of figuring out where the clanging noise came from).

the original was the cub tractor from 1062 to about 1964. The 70 came later.
